Precautions for installing gas pipelines

2026/6/22

Special gases (special gases) usually have characteristics such as flammability, explosiveness, toxicity, corrosiveness or high purity. The installation of pipelines must strictly follow the specifications. The key points are as follows:
01. Material selection
Select pipe materials based on the chemical properties of the gas: corrosive gases (such as hydrogen chloride) use PVDF, PTFE; high-purity gases (such as electronic-grade argon, nitrogen) use 316L EP (electrolytic polishing) stainless steel to avoid impurity contamination.
Accessories (valves, joints) must be compatible with the pipe materials. Mixing of different materials is strictly prohibited to avoid electrochemical corrosion.
02. Cleanliness treatment
Before installation, the pipe materials and accessories need to be cleaned, passivated, and dried to remove oil, metal debris and moisture. High-purity gas pipelines need to reach dust-free cleanliness level.
The construction site should be kept clean to prevent dust and impurities from entering the pipeline. It is recommended to carry out prefabrication and assembly in a clean environment.
03. Connection technology
High-purity/corrosive gas pipelines should preferentially use automatic track welding to ensure uniform welds without pores and reduce the risk of leakage; threaded connections (which are prone to leakage points and particle contamination) are strictly prohibited after welding.
After welding, weld flaw detection and helium leak testing should be conducted to ensure welding quality.
04. Pipeline layout
The path should be short and straight to reduce elbows, three-way fittings, etc., and reduce the risk of gas stagnation and particle accumulation; avoid passing through flammable, explosive, high-temperature and high-humidity areas.
Set a slope (generally 1‰ to 3‰) to facilitate the discharge of liquid in the pipeline; high-purity gas pipelines need to install blow-off ports and vent ports to facilitate later maintenance.
Keep a safe distance from other pipelines (such as compressed air, water supply and drainage pipes), and do not mix them.
05. Safety protection
Flammable/toxic gas pipelines need to install leakage detection alarms, emergency shut-off valves, and connect them to the central control system; the vent ports need to be led to an outdoor safe area and equipped with a fire damper.
The outer wall of the pipeline should be marked with the type of gas, direction of flow, and hazard level in accordance with the specifications. High-risk gas pipelines need to be equipped with protective sleeves.
06. Pressure test and acceptance
After installation, conduct water pressure test (pressure-bearing pipelines), air tightness test, and helium leak test in sequence. The test pressure should not be less than 1.15 times the design pressure.
High-purity gas pipelines also need to undergo particle size detection and moisture, oxygen content detection. They can be put into use only after meeting the standards.
07. Construction management
Construction personnel should hold certificates and be familiar with the safety characteristics and operation specifications of special gases;
Keep records during the construction process and retain welding parameters, test reports, etc.
