The six fundamental principles and requirements for the design of cleanroom buildings

2026/10/8

The design of clean workshops is a highly specialized systematic project that directly affects the cleanliness of the production environment, product quality, and personnel safety.
According to relevant national standards (such as "Design Specifications for Clean Workshops" GB 50073-2013) and industry practices, the design of clean workshops mainly has the following core requirements:
01 Site selection and overall layout
Site selection requirements: The workshop should be located in an area with clean environment and no significant pollution risks. It should maintain a minimum hygiene protection distance of no less than 25 meters from various toxic and harmful places and other pollution sources, and be preferably located in the upwind direction of the prevailing wind of the pollution source throughout the year.
Zoning and flow lines: The factory area should be reasonably divided into clean production areas, auxiliary production areas, storage and logistics areas, office and living areas, etc. The boundaries of each area should be clear. It is necessary to strictly follow the principle of "separation of personnel flow, material flow, and waste flow", set up independent channels to ensure that the flow is in a forward direction without looping or crossing, and avoid cross-contamination risks from a global perspective.

02 Building space and structure
Floor height reservation: It is necessary to comprehensively consider the pipe diameters of the air purification system's supply and return air ducts, fire protection pipelines, and structural beams, and reserve sufficient vertical space. For conventional non-unidirectional flow clean workshops, the net height of the air duct installation area in the ceiling should not be lower than 1.2 meters.
Structural flexibility: The architectural layout and space should have appropriate flexibility. The main structure should preferably adopt large-space and large-span column grids, and should not use the wall-bearing system. Deformation joints in the workshop should not pass through the clean area.

03 Indoor decoration and enclosure materials
Material characteristics: The enclosure structure and indoor decoration should select materials with good air tightness, small deformation when temperature and humidity change, no dust production, no dust accumulation, corrosion resistance, and easy cleaning, and must not release substances that affect the quality of indoor products.
Fire protection requirements: The ceiling, wall panels, and core materials must be non-combustible, and organic composite materials must not be used. Their fire resistance limit should comply with fire protection regulations.
Detail handling: The surfaces of walls and ceilings should be smooth and flat, with few concave and convex areas. All corners, wall-to-floor/wall-to-ceiling junctions should be rounded (such as R ≥ 50mm), and the seams of plate joints should be fully sealed with sealant to prevent dust accumulation. The floor should be flat, wear-resistant, anti-static, slip-resistant, and not prone to accumulate static electricity.

04 Doors and windows and sealing design
Door configuration: The sealed doors of the clean room should open towards the room with higher air cleanliness and be equipped with a closing device; for clean rooms without windows, the door should be equipped with an observation window. The exterior windows should be double-glazed fixed windows and should not be opened at will, and their fire resistance limit should comply with fire protection regulations.
Comprehensive sealing: Reliable sealing measures should be taken for doors, walls, ceilings, floors, and construction joints. The openings for pipelines, lamps, etc. passing through the walls should be double-layer sealed.

05 Color and light environment
Color requirements: The indoor color should be elegant and soft to improve the environment and reduce employee fatigue.
Light reflection coefficient: To reduce visual fatigue and improve the lighting environment, the light reflection coefficient of the ceiling and wall surface materials should be 0.6-0.8, and the light reflection coefficient of the floor surface materials should be 0.15-0.35.

06 Vibration isolation and noise control
Noise control: When the noise of the purification air conditioning system exceeds the allowable value, measures such as sound insulation, noise reduction, and vibration isolation should be taken; except for accident exhaust, the exhaust system should undergo noise reduction design.
Vibration control measures: For vibration-sensitive equipment areas, vibration control design (such as foundation vibration isolation, flexible connection of pipelines) should be carried out, and the vibration control measures should not affect the airflow pattern in the clean room.
